ORVLA General Meeting
Saturday, December 3, 2011
Roberta’s Catering; Coshocton, Ohio

ORVLA President, Bill Safreed, welcomed everyone to our Christmas meeting and thanked them for attending.

ORVLA again has hand painted Christmas ornaments for sale.  They have llamas on them and each is one of a kind.  The remaining T-shirts are available for $10.00 each.

The new Topline editor is Pat Linkhorn.  Pat also does our web site and will publish Topline in a hard copy as well as an on-line format.  Pat reminded everyone to send her your ads and articles for publication.  The on-line version will use color.  Pat also asked that members go to the web site and fill out the survey.  We would like to hear your comments.

Fred Tarr announced that ORVLA is going to do the 50/50 drawing again this year, with some modification.  Tickets will be $5.00 and can be purchased from volunteers.  If you would like to sell tickets please contact Libby Rush to sign up.  The winner will be drawn at the Summer meeting.

Up- coming shows were announced.  The Fairfield County show will be held April 21, 2012, the Daffodil Classic will be held April 28, 2012, the Eastern Ohio Llama show will be held May 12, 2012 and the Mountaineer Llama show will be held June 2, 2012.  Please get your information to Pat Linkhorn to be listed the “Calendar of Events”.

Election results were announced.  Darlene Sutton was elected to fill a three year term.  Bill Safreed and Fred Tarr were re-elected to fill three year terms.

Four of ORVLA’s former youth, David Ruckman, Dr. Charlene Arendas, Cathy Bradford and Brandon Forshey, talked about what they have been doing since graduation.

Terri Cremens won $135.00 in the 50/50 drawing and graciously donated it back to ORVLA.  Thank you Teri.

$1,283.00 was raised by the Silent Auction.  Thanks to everyone who helped to organize the event, those who donated items, and especially to those who bid on the items.

ORVLA Board of Director’s Meeting
Sunday, October 9, 2011
Rob and Donna Spencer’s Home, Beloit, OH
Prior to the ORVLA sponsored Hike/Picnic

Members present:  Bill Safreed, Fred Tarr, Lee Ann King, Janice Schilling, Kris Miller and Cindy Wilson.  Members absent:  Doug Targett, Joy Forshey and Nick Fischer.  Others present:  Marie Safreed.

President Bill Safreed called the meeting to order.  The July 9, 21011 minutes were approved as e-mailed.

After discussion, the treasurer’s report was approved on a motion by Cindy Wilson and seconded by Fred Tarr.  Motion carried.

Under Old Business, Janice Schilling reported that they have three applications for the scholarship this year.

Bill Safreed asked about member interest in the Farm Science Review.  We believe only three farms participated this year.  We may need to re-evaluate continuing this activity.
Lee Ann King discussed details for the December Christmas meeting.  Tina Selhorn will be helping with the silent auction.  Kris Miller reported that she has ordered 30 Christmas ornaments.  Because of the busy schedule for that meeting, it was decided that today’s BOD meeting will replace the meeting we were going to have at the Christmas get-together.  Those present discussed the reasons for the high cost of the Christmas meeting and concerns that these costs could affect attendance.  Cindy Wilson moved that ORVLA pay $5.00 toward the cost of the Christmas dinner for those attending.  Lee Ann King seconded.  Motion carried.

The BOD has decided the leave nominations for the Board of Directors open until the end of today because we have only two nominations to fill three open positions.
Janice Schilling suggested that we add a portion to the ballots so members can make suggestions for activities or events they would like ORVLA to do next year.  Everyone agreed.

Under New Business, Fred Tarr suggested that ORVLA again try the 50/50 drawing with some modification.  There would be 400 tickets at $5.00 each.  Only those who want to, would sell them.  If all tickets were sold, the winner would get $1000.00 and ORVLA would get $1000.00.  Janice Schilling moved that ORVLA do the 50/50 drawing again.  Kris Miller seconded.  Motion carried.

Fred Tarr moved to adjourn.  Janice Schilling seconded.  Meeting adjourned.

Board members voted 5 for and 4 against giving $300.00 to participate with other organizationsin setting up a booth at the FFA National Convention.
Board members voted 5 for and 4 against giving $200.00 to the ALSA National Fleece show.
Board members voted unanimously to provide $200.00 for the purchase of prizes to be given to attendees at the Hike/Picnic.
Board members voted unanimously to give a free membership as a prize at the Hike/Picnic. 

ORVLA General Meeting
Saturday, July 9, 2011
Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital

President Bill Safreed called the meeting to order and thanked members and guests for attending.  Bill introduced Dr. Lakritz and thanked him for allowing us to have this meeting at the Veterinary Hospital and for providing today’s program.

The minutes of the last BOD meeting and the minutes of today’s meetings will be published in the next Topline.

Kris Miller reported that the Summer Solstice show, sponsored by ORVLA, cleared $112.50 this year.  Our treasury balance remains about the same.  The Treasurer’s report will also be published in the next Topline.

Kris and Joy Forshey talked about ORVLA’s participation in Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital’s Open House which was held May 21st.  This is put on for future students and their parents, and is open to the public.  There were approximately 2,500 people in attendance this year.  Dr. Lakritz commented that the event was a big success from the University’s perspective.

Libby Rush talked about the up-coming ORVLA Picnic and Hike to be held October 9th at Rob and Donna Spencer’s farm.  NEOLA has graciously offered to provide the food for the occasion.  There will be food and games, the opportunity to visit with other llama owners and about a mile of mowed trails to hike with our llamas.  Fun for everyone.  October 16th is the rain date.

The December meeting will be held at Roberta’s Catering in Coshocton, Ohio on December 3rd.  Four of ORVLA’s youth, who are now adults and still involved with llamas, will be our speakers.

Farm Science Review is coming up the third week of September.  If you would like to participate or have questions, contact Doug and Gail Targett.

After ten years, Donna Spencer is going to give up being the editor of Topline at the end of this year.  We are looking for someone who would be interested in taking this over.  Please contact one of the board members if you are interested.

Elections are coming up.  There are three positions up for election.  If anyone is interested in running for the BOD contact Nick Fischer.

Libby Rush reminded everyone that ORVLA has 4-H memberships.  The club would receive two Toplines along with other benefits, but would not vote.  The cost is $15.00.

Announcements:  The Hartford Fair Llama Show is August 12th, contact Cindy Ruckman for information. The Fulton County Fair Llama show is September 2nd, contact Joy Forshey for information.

The meeting was adjourned and turned over to Dr. Lakritz for his presentation followed by a tour of the Vet School facility.

ORVLA Board of Director’s Meeting

Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital

A brief meeting was held by the BOD prior to the General meeting.  Members present:  Kris Miller, Nick Fischer, Janice Schilling, Joy Forshey, Lee Ann King and Cindy Wilson.

There was discussion with regards to finding a replacement for Topline editor, Donna Spencer, who wishes to leave that position at the end of this year.  Several options were discussed.

Nick Fischer said that he feels that ORVLA needs to pay Bill Wycoff for all the trouble he goes to in providing obstacles for the Summer Solstice show.  After discussion, Nick moved that Bill Wycoff be paid $100.00 for providing obstacles for the Summer Solstice show.  Joy Forshey seconded the motion.  That motion carried.

Nick reported that plans for the December meeting, to be held at Roberta’s Catering in Coshoction, OH on December 3rd, are coming together.  Four of ORVLA’s youths, who are now adults and still involved with llamas, will be speakers at the meeting.  It was decided that ORVLA will pay for the speakers  lunches.

Nick also reported that elections are coming up.  There are three positions open for election this year.  The three board members whose first terms are ending are eligible to run for a second term if they wish.

Nick reported for the scholarship committee saying they have so far received two applications for this year’s scholarship.

Nick moved to adjourn the meeting.  Joy seconded the motion.  Meeting adjourned.

ORVLA Board of Director’s Meeting

Members present:  Kris Miller, Bill Safreed, Fred Tarr, Janice Schilling, Nick Fischer, Doug Targett and Cindy Wilson.  Absent:  Joy Forshey and Lee Ann King.

Others present:  Gail Targett, Marie Safreed, Renee Tarr, Rob and Donna Spencer, Libby Rush and Char Neel.

President Bill Safreed called the meeting to order.   The secretary’s minutes were printed in the February issue of Topline.  Doug Targett made a motion to accept the minutes and Fred Tarr seconded the motion.  The treasurer’s report was approved on a motion from Doug Targett, seconded by Cindy Wilson.

Under old business, tee-shirt sales were discussed.  Janice Schilling moved that Kris Miller re-order the minimum amount and fill in sizes needed.  Doug Targett seconded the motion.

Kris Miller reported that everything is set up for ORVLA’s participation in Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Open House on May 21st.  Kris and Joy Forshey will talk with attendees.   Joy will bring animals, fiber products and will spin during the event.

Kris Miller reported the summer meeting, to be held July 9th at the OSU Veterinary Hospital has been set up with Dr. Lakritz.  There will be a boxed lunch and OSU will provide a program.

Nick Fischer reported the ORVLA Summer Solstice show will be held Saturday, June 11th at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds.  The facility is scheduled and the judges have been hired.  Jean Haumschild is the show superintendent.
Fred Tarr shared that he has some concerns about the ORVLA Hike/Picnic being held on a Sunday because many members will have work or school the following day.  After discussion, it was decided to keep the same dates ( Sunday, October 9th with Sunday, October 15th as a rain date), but to start about noon so people could participate in the event and still get home to prepare for the next day.  The Board meeting will be held at the Summer Meeting at OSU Vet School instead of at the Hike/Picnic.

Nick Fischer said the facility is reserved for the December Meeting.  They will do a menu at a later date.

Doug Targett reported that he, Paul Doran and Brandon Forshey represented Llama owners at several meeting scheduled to make recommendations for Camelid care to be considered by the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board.  Some proposals would have required that basic care such as worming, shots and toe nail trimming be done under the supervision of a veterinarian.  However, these did not get through committee.  There is a $500.00 fine for the first violation and a $1,000.00 fine for the second violation.  Doug said we need to be vigilant, if this comes back up; we need to make sure we are represented.

Youth Scholarships were discussed again.  Cindy Wilson moved that ORVLA pay the difference in what was donated with memberships and give out one scholarship this year and that the issue be discussed at the Summer Meeting to get an idea of how the membership feels about continuing with scholarships in light of our present financial status.  Doug Targett seconded the motion.

Doug Targett talked about Farm Science Review.  He said if we don’t get more participation from members maybe we should consider not doing it.  As an organization are we getting our monies worth?  Bill Safreed said he feels as a State wide organization we need to be a part of it.  We will continue this year but need to look at costs verses results.  We will discuss it at the summer meeting.

The Board talked about expected requests for monetary support.  We need to remember that if we sponsor or donate to one organization we will be expected to give to all competing groups.

Under New Business, Donna Spencer addressed the Board stating she wants to finish up as Topline editor this year.  She has done it for 10 years.  The Board expressed their dismay at her announcement and acknowledged the difficulty it will be to fill her shoes.  Donna will put an article in Topline looking for persons interested in becoming Topline Editor.  In the article she will also ask members if they would possibly like to receive Topline on-line.  Pat Linkhorn will also put this on our web site.

Rob Spencer reported that he still has some of the show ring dividers and ropes made for ORVLA by Jerry Tope.  Don McFarland has the rest of them.  Rob would like for someone else to store them.  Rob will bring them to Fred Tarr at his show.

Nick reported for the elections committee stating elections are coming up.  The first terms of Bill Safreed, Fred Tarr and Lee Ann King are up this year.  They are eligible to run for a second term if they wish.

Doug Targett moved that the meeting be adjourned.  Fred Tarr seconded the motion.  Meeting adjourned.

ORVLA Board of Director’s Meeting

Member present:  Bill Safreed, Joy Forshey, Fred Tarr, Kris Miller, Lee Ann King, Nick Fischer, Doug Targett, Cindy Wilson, and Janice Schilling.  Others present:  Rob and Donna Spencer, Marie Safreed, Libby Rush, Char Neal, Gayle Targett and Renee Tarr.

President, Fred Tarr called the meeting to order.  The secretary’s minutes were discussed.  With a minor correction made, Lee Ann King made a motion to accept the minutes.  Janice Schilling seconded the motion, and motion carried.

Treasurer, Kris Miller gave members the end-of-the-year treasurer’s report.  Nick Fischer made a motion to accept the report and Bill Safreed seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

There was discussion of the per-use charge for using Pay-Pal.  Janice Schilling made a motion that we stay with Pay Pal for now and re-evaluate at our October meeting.  Doug Targett seconded.  Motion carried.

Since this was the yearly re-organizational meeting of the board, the following were elected to offices and as board liaisons for the ORVLA committees:  Bill Safreed - president; Fred Tarr – vice president; Cindy Wilson – secretary; Kris Miller – treasurer; election committee – Nick Fischer; fiber – Lee Ann King; historian – Cindy Wilson; library – Fred Tarr; marketing/PR – Doug Targett/Joy Forshey; membership – Fred Tarr; ORVLA web page – Janice Schilling/Lee Ann King; program – Nick Fischer/Bill Safreed; scholarship – Nick Fischer/Janice Schilling; publication – Lee Ann King; sunshine – Cindy Wilson and youth committee – Joy Forshey.

Under Old Business, board members discussed the concern of decreasing income and the amount of sponsorship and expenses going out. Joy Forshey made a motion that a finance/budget committee be formed.  Bill Safreed seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Bill Safreed, Kris Miller, Lee Ann King and Cindy Wilson agreed to serve on the committee.

Libby Rush reported that Rob and Donna Spencer have volunteered their farm as a possible location for the ORVLA Hike/Picnic.  After discussion, Fred Tarr made a motion that an ORVLA sponsored Hike/Picnic be held at the Spencer’s farm on Sunday October 9, 2011 with Sunday October 16, 2011 as a rain date.  Kris Miller seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Nick Fischer reported that he has been unable to connect with the Coshocton County Fair Board to set a date for the Summer Solstice Llama Show.  Bill Safreed reported that the ILR has revised their halter classes.  This will allow a dual sanctioned show to combine ALSA and ILR classes as we did two years ago.  Nick will get with Jean Haumschild and secure a judge after he gets a date.

Nick Fischer read a thank you card received from Hank and Connie Kaufman expressing their appreciation to ORVLA, for the recognition, dinner and camaraderie extended to them at the December 4th meeting.

Nick reminded board members that the discussion of the youth scholarships was tabled at the last meeting.  After discussion, Bill Safreed made a motion to continue to table this discussion until the finance/budget committee reports back to the board.  Joy Forshey seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Under New Business, Libby Rush reported for the membership committee.  She passed around a four page directory which could be inserted into the Top Line.  This new format could save printing and postage costs.  Janice Schilling made a motion to use this new format for our ORVLA Membership Directory with the addition of pages to accommodate business card ads.  Joy Forshey seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Bill and Nancy Amidon were the winners of the ORVLA membership drawing.  They were selected from the members who renewed their membership by the early bird deadline.

Donna Spencer spoke about the Top Line.  All pictures must be camera ready and all articles must be in a word document when sent to Donna for the Top Line.  Articles need to be submitted in a timely fashion.  The board supports Donna and appreciates all the hard work she puts into the Top Line.  Donna reported that there is advertising space available.

Lee Ann King reported that Barb Baker sent her information about a Camelid Conference to be held in Houston, TX asking if ORVLA would be interested in joining with other llama organizations to help sponsor this event.  Nick Fischer made a motion that ORVLA not participate.  Doug Targett seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

OSU Veterinary School of Medicine is holding an Open House on May 21, 2011 and asked if ORVLA would like to participate.  Kris Miller and Joy Forshey will represent ORVLA at the event.
Kris Miller will contact Dr. Lakritz at OSU Veterinary School of Medicine about the possibility of having our Summer Meeting at the Vet School, possibly July 9th or 17th.

Fred Tarr reported that he received a request from Mr. Mike Bailey, Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, requesting that ORVLA send a representative to a meeting to be held in Columbus on January 27, 2011.  Doug Targett will attend and will contact Paul Doran to see if he will also attend. 

The December Meeting will be a one day meeting possibly held on December 3, 2011.  Nick Fischer will contact Roberta’s Catering in Coshocton to see if this date is available.  The board will also meet after the Daffodil Show in Coshocton on April 30th and at the October Hike/Picnic held at Spencer’s.

Nick Fischer moved to adjourn the meeting.  Bill Safreed seconded.  Meeting adjourned.

President Fred Tarr called the meeting to order.  The secretary’s minutes were printed in the last issue of the Topline.  Bill Wycoff made a motion to accept the minutes and Lisa Blidar seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  The treasurer’s report was also approved via a motion by Joy Forshey and seconded by Bill Wycoff.  That motion carried.

Under old business, the youth scholarship was discussed.  Information on the history of the scholarship was presented to the board.  It was decided to table the discussion until the organizational meeting in January.

Nick Fischer talked with members concerning the recent election for board members.  Cindy Wilson, Janice Schilling and Doug Targett will begin terms on the board in January.  Nick will also give the results at the general meeting.

Doug Targett agreed to speak on the Farm Science Review at the general meeting as well.

The Summer Solstice Llama Show dates were discussed.  Because of a conflict, Nick is to check with the Coshocton County Fairboard about securing the June 25 date as first choice and June 11th as a second choice.  Sanctioning of the show was discussed versus having an open show.  No action was taken.

Lee Ann King thanked the board for sponsoring the ALSA National Fleece Show.  The committee was able to give many premiums due to generous sponsoring of the event.

Under new business, the 2011 organizational meeting date was set for January 9th at the home of Lee Ann King.  The board meeting will begin at 10AM.

Lee Ann King made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Bill Wycoff seconded it.  The motion carried.

ORVLA Board of Directors’ Meeting

President Fred Tarr called the meeting to order.  Copies of the last secretary’s report were distributed for approval.  Bill Wycoff made a motion to accept the secretary’s report as printed, and Joy Forshey seconded that motion.  The motion carried.  The treasurer’s report, including a breakdown of income and expenses from the Summer Solstice Llama Show, was given to each member.  Lee Ann King made a motion to accept this report with Lisa Blidar seconding the motion.  The motion carried.

Under old business, the board discussed the positives and negatives of the Summer Solstice show.  Everyone felt the show was well attended and ran efficiently.  Concern was expressed about the loss of revenue from the show, but it was pointed out that ORVLA paid two sets of premiums to cover both the ALSA and ILR-SD individual shows.  The board felt that the show needed to follow a similar format next year as the show did in 2009.  The previously used format could benefit both the exhibitor and ORVLA  financially. Kris announced that Trophies Unlimited (Bev Frye) had reduced some of the costs of the ribbons as a sponsor for the show.  The board expressed appreciation of Bev’s generous gift. The 2011 show was tentatively set for June 18, 2011 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds in Coshocton, OH.  Nick Fischer will secure that date with the Coshocton County Fairboard.

Nick announced that one nomination had been received for the upcoming Board of Director’s election.  Three seats on the board will be open.  Nick had nomination forms and will make an announcement about the nominating process at the general meeting.

Under new business, Nick told the board that he had received one applicationfor the youth scholarship this year.  The board determined that the deadline date should be kept
and not extended.

Lee Ann King asked the board to consider being a sponsor again this year for the ALSA Grand National Fleece Show.  Joy Forshey made a motion to sponsor in the amount of $200.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Debby Ullrich, guest speaker for the general meeting, did not charge ORVLA for her program since she was forced to cancel in December, but had to absorb the cost of her canceled December flight, book a new flight and accumulate various expenses associated with her trip.  The board felt that she should be compensated for some of her travel cost.  Bill Wycoff made the motion to pay Debby $500.  Lee Ann King seconded the motion and the motion carried.
The board discussed the December membership meeting and decided not to schedule a program, but to keep the time open for socializing and participating in the annual silent auction.  The meeting will be held December 11th at Miller’s Farm @ Darby Creek in Galloway, OH.

Donna Spencer, editor of Topline, requested that the board determine if a fee would be charged for farms or individuals to post show information on the ORVLA website.  After discussion, the board approved the following fees:

• $10 fee for any member wishing to advertise a show, farm sale, etc. and have the forms available for downloading from the ORVLA’s website.
• $20 for non-members to advertise a show, farm sale, etc. with forms made available for downloading from the website.
• $20 for a one-year business or vendor advertisement, limiting the size of that advertisement to that of a business card.
• No charge for adding events to the calendar or adding a farm link.

Nick Fischer made a motion to accept these fees and Lee Ann King seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

It was brought to the attention of the board that Llama Life II will advertise organizations free-of-charge in their publication.  Kris Miller agreed to contact Paige McGrath about including ORVLA on this page.

The next Board of Directors’ meeting is scheduled for December 11th, prior to the general meeting, to begin at 9:30 AM.

Bill Wycoff moved the meeting adjourn.  Nick Fischer seconded that motion and the motion carried.

President Fred Tarr called the meeting to order.  Both the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were emailed to board members prior to the meeting.  With no additions or corrections, Bill Wycoff made a motion to accept the secretary’s report and Nick Fischer seconded the motion.  Bill Wycoff moved to accept the treasurer’s report and Bill Safreed seconded that motion.  Both motions carried.

Under old business, Fred read a card from Kelsey Amidon thanking ORVLA for her scholarship.  Fred said that the note had been included in the current issue of Topline.  Nick and Jean gave an update on the Summer Solstice Llama Show to be held June 26 at the Coshocton Fairgrounds.  Sanctioning through ILR and ALSA has been done, a potential concession stand provider has been contacted, the ribbons ordered and judges’ contracts signed and returned.  A concern was expressed about being able to download the show information from the ORVLA website.  Jean will contact Connie Kauffman about the problem.  Lisa Blidar made a request for tables for the silent auction to be held in conjunction with the show.

Fred reported from the membership committee that raffle ticket sales have been slow, but they are expected to pick up now that the show season has begun.  ORVLA membership currently stands at 110 farms.

Nick reported that he had been in contact with Debby Ullrich about speaking on color selection at the summer meeting.  Kris has already taken care of the caterer, with the registration forms included in the currentTopline.  The board meeting for that morning was set for 9:30 AM.

Under new business, Nick reminded board members that we need to be soliciting members to run for the next year’s Board of Directors.  Three members’ seats will be open.

Barb Baker spoke to the board about the upcoming display at the National FFA Convention.  This year the FFA committee would like to include some hands-on demonstrations of the various performance classes.  She approached the board about being a larger regional sponsor this year.   After discussion, Nick Fischer moved that ORVLA contribute $500 towards the FFA display.  Joy Forshey seconded the motion and the motion carried.

Bill Safreed, as a representative of ILR, spoke to the board about the 25th anniversary of the ILR and the special shows and activities planned for this year.  He asked that the board consider being a friend sponsor with a donation to help defray some of the costs of the planned activities.  Bill Wycoff made a motion to donate $100 to the ILR and Lisa Blidar seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

The next board meeting will be held July 17th at the home of Kris Miller, beginning at 9:30 AM.

President Fischer called the meeting to order.  The secretary’s minutes were distributed for approval.  With a couple of minor corrections made, Bill Wycoff made a motion to accept the minutes.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Out-going treasurer Janice Schilling gave members the end-of-year treasurer’s report.  It was noted that a $50 check made in memory of a past member had not been cashed, and since a new treasurer would be changing banks, she felt the family should be notified.  Joy Forshey agreed to contact the family concerning the check.  It was also noted that the Farm Science Review income included both 2008 and 2009 exhibitor fees.  Janice also noted that the bank had increased their monthly fee to $5.  Fred Tarr made a motion to accept the report and Bill Wycoff seconded it.  Motion carried.

Under old business, board members discussed the Farm Science Review and the recent results of a poll on lowering exhibitor fees.  Lee Ann King made a motion to lower the exhibitor fee to $75 per day.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion and the motion carried.  Doug and Gail Targett have agreed to chair the Farm Science Review again for next year.

Fred Tarr gave the board an update on the raffle ticket sale.  Nearly $700 has been received from tickets sold at this time.  It is hoped that members will actively become involved in selling tickets now that the holiday season is over.  Lisa Blidar agreed to contact other lama organizations about selling or purchasing tickets.

Fred also reported that membership renewals are down at this time, but hopes that many will renew during this month.  The drawing for a free 2011 membership was held from those members who took advantage of the early bird renewal.  Lee and Judy Coppes from Findlay, OH were drawn as the winners.

Under new business, the ORVLA Summer Solstice show was discussed.  Board members felt that the show should be held, but agreed that another, more cost-friendly facility should be used.   Nick Fischer agreed to contact the Coshocton County Fairboard about using the Coshocton Fairgrounds for the show.  A tentative date of June 26 was set, pending the availability of the fairgrounds.  After much discussion, members agreed to sanction the show through both ALSA and the ILR-SD.  Further information will become available in the Topline and on the ORVLA website.  

Nick Fischer read a letter from Bill Amidon explaining the process he completed to keep ORVLA as a non-profit organization with the IRS.  Since ORVLA will need to file paper work this year, the board will ask Bill to continue his work in this capacity for the organization.

Nick said he had been contacted by Barb Baker about ORVLA being a sponsor for the upcoming Camelid Health Conference to be held for owners and breeders March 25 at The Ohio State University.  Bill Safreed made a motion to send $250 as a sponsor for the conference.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion and the motion carried.

2010 Board of Directors’ meetings were set.  The board will meet Saturday, April 17th, following the completion of the Daffodil Classic Llama Show in Coshocton; July 17 prior to the summer general meeting at Millers’ Farm @Darby Creek, Galloway; and December 11 prior to the Christmas general meeting and silent auction, location to be announced.  ORVLA members are welcome to attend any board of director meeting.

President Fischer called the meeting to order.  The secretary’s minutes were distributed.  With no additions or corrections, Bill Wycoff made a motion to accept the minutes as printed.  Bill Amidon seconded the motion and the motion carried.

The treasurer’s end-of-year report will be sent via email to board members.  Janice stated that preliminary indications showed that ORVLA would break even with the expenses of the seminar and Christmas dinner/meeting.

Nick stated that he had been in contact with Debby Ullrich all week and because of a heavy amount of snow in her region, she wouldn’t be able to speak at the afternoon session of the seminar.  He said that she was very sorry and that she offered to come another time to give her presentation.

Report on the ORVLA raffle showed that 49 tickets had been sold to date.  Tickets were mailed out with membership renewals.  While a bit discouraged at the number of tickets returned unsold, Libby, Char and Fred were glad that the unsold tickets had been returned for further distribution.  An explanation of the raffle was placed on each table for today’s buffet.

Libby and Char reported that 30 members had taken advantage of the early bird renewal.  ORVLA has picked up three new members as well.  Currently ORVLA has a membership of 129 farms.

Libby and Char also brought up the idea of an ORVLA sponsored llama hike.  They pointed out that many do not participate in shows but enjoy hiking with their animals.  They suggested that ORVLA coordinate the hike near the Columbus area for its central location, charge each farm a $5 fee to participate, then have a cook-out following the hiking.  Members decided to bring this idea up to at the general meeting.

New board members Kris Miller and Joy Forshey were welcomed.  Nick Fischer was the third member re-elected to the board.  It was noted that 20 farms of the 58 that responded to lowering the cost for participating in Farm Science Review was encouraging.  The board will address that issue when it re-convenes in January.

Joy Forshey reported that the LAMA Medical Research Group which is part of the Morris Animal Foundation needs funding.  She asked that ORVLA consider ear-marking funds, depending upon the final results of the day’s silent auction, for animal research.  She stated that ORVLA could pick a specific research project to help fund.

Bill Safreed urged members to keep up with the newly approved animal care board and guidelines approved by Ohio voters in the November election.  It is not known at this time if a lama representative will be needed for a sub-committee or to have other input on the new regulations to come.

Bill Amidon presented a bill of $180 to Connie Kaufman to maintain the ORVLA website.  Bill Amidon made a motion to pay Connie for her services, and Bill Safreed seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Nick said that he had been contacted by Dr. Bravo for ORVLA support in purchasing plates needed at the research center in Peru.  Joy will answer Dr. Bravo’s email for the board.  Bill Amidon made a motion to send $250 to help purchase the needed plates, and Bill Safreed seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

Retiring board members Janice Schilling and Bill Wycoff were thanked for their service to the board.

The 2010 re-organization board meeting will be held January 10th, 10 A.M.at Lee Ann King’s home.

General Meeting (12:30 P.M.)  

President Fischer called the meeting to order. Two new first- time to ORVLA were introduced and welcomed.

Fred Tarr spoke to members about the ORVLA raffle.  It was explained that ORVLA tries to support many worthwhile projects, (scholarships to youth, lama research, FFA Convention to name a few), but with a lower membership, more funds were needed in the treasury. If all 1000 tickets were sold, ORVLA would see a profit of $4000. 

Libby Rush presented the membership with an idea for a fun activity.  She suggested a llama hike to be held in a central location with a cookout to follow.  Anyone interested in chairing this event or working on a committee for a llama hike should contact Libby or a board member.

President Fischer called the meeting to order.

The secretary’s minutes from the previous meeting were distributed among members.  With no additions or corrections, Bill Wycoff moved that the minutes be accepted as printed.  Bill Amidon seconded the motion and the motion carried.

Janice Schilling gave each member a copy of the treasurer’s report and a break-down of income/expenses from the Summer Solstice Llama and Fleece Show.  Fred Tarr made a motion to accept the reports as printed and Bill Amidon seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Under old business, members discussed different aspects of the Summer Solstice shows.  Although a monetary loss was noted, members felt the reduced entry fee and stall fee were beneficial to the exhibitors.  It was also pointed out that the judges’ fees were higher than the previous year, due to the traveling distance each judge logged.  It was decided to explore different facilities for next year’s show.

The annual Christmas meeting and bi-annual seminar was set for Saturday, December 12th, at the Berlin Inn & Suites in Holmes County.  Schumaker Farms will cater the meal.  Further information, fees and phone number for the hotel will be included in the Topline.  

Under new business, Nick read a letter from Barb Baker concerning the National FFA Convention and the llama displays set up there.  Bill Amidon made a motion to give the committee $200 towards expenses.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Lee Ann King requested financial support for the ALSA National Fleece Show.  Bill Amidon made the motion to sponsor $200.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

A request for sponsorship of the Buckeye Regional was also made by the Haumschilds.  Bill Amidon made the motion to sponsor the regional at $350 as in years past, if the regional show is held this year.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.   

Nick reminded everyone of the ORVLA scholarship deadline September 15.  To date only one application had been received.

Three board positions will be open this year in the election.  Barb Baker is the election chairperson.  Anyone wishing to run for the board should get an application and secure the proper nominations.

The next meeting will be held Saturday, October 10th, following the first day of classes of the Buckeye Regional in Sunbury, OH.

Bill Wycoff made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Fred Tarr seconded it.  Motion carried.

General Meeting

President Fischer called the meeting to order.  All new members and first time attendees were introduced and welcomed.

Nick gave a brief report on the Summer Solstice shows and explained that the board would be looking at other possible facilities for next year’s show.

Nick reminded members of the ORVLA Youth Scholarship deadline September 15th.

The Christmas meeting and bi-annual seminar was announced for December 12th at the Berlin Inn & Suites.  Dr. Eric Shaver will be a guest speaker as well as Debby Ullrich from California on her work of breeding for color.

Doug Targett spoke on the Farm Science Review to be held September 22-24.  Any farm wishing to exhibit should contact Doug or Gail.  The fee to exhibit is $125 per day.

Nick reminded the membership of the upcoming election for board positions.  Three positions will be open for election.  Questions should be directed to Barb Baker, election chairperson.

Several llama shows were announced: Jefferson County (August 23) andCoshocton County (October 4).

Barb Baker spoke on the llama exhibit at the National FFA Convention.  She stated that 55,000 attendees were expected this year.  Mini Llamas will also be a part of the display.  Barb reported that 10 new llama projects were started last year through FFA from information gathered at the llama booths.

Barb also reminded the membership of the Camelid Community Conference to be held July 31- August 2 in Kansas City.  Anyone is welcome to attend.

President Fischer dismissed the meeting for the afternoon’s program.  Rick Wagner of Wagner Insurance Agency spoke to the members about selecting the proper coverage for both residences and farms/businesses.

Dr. Walter Bravo presented a power point about llamas in Peru and the work being done at the La Raya Research Station to save crias from dying from Enterotoxaemia.  He presented ORVLA with the receipt from the purchase of a freezer used now at the research station to store plasma for crias. (ORVLA contributed money towards purchasing this freezer during the summer meeting in 2008.)   Dr. Bravo explained that research is currently underway to develop a vaccine against Enterotoxaemia, and that microbiologists from Peruwill be coming to the United States to learn how to make the vaccine.

The treasurer distributed copies of transactions made since January 1, 2009.  Bill Safreed made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Under old business, Nick and Jean reported on the entries for the Summer Solstice show, and recognized the generous support of sponsors to the show.  A full report will be available by the next board meeting.

Doug Targett, chairman of the Farm Science Review, asked the board for clarification on funding and procedure concerning the Review and ORVLA’s display.  Information about Farm Science Review will be put in the nextTopline and also discussed at the general meeting in July.

Nick reminded everyone of the summer general meeting July 12 at the River Grille in Coshocton.  Discussion was held about the December seminar and general meeting.  Janice Schilling reported that she had talked with the facility we had previously used and said we could get the banquet room for the day.  She also suggested we use a catering service instead of the upstairs restaurant.  The banquet conference room is operated by Berlin Inn & Suites, separate from the upstairs restaurant.  It was decided to table final plans until the next board meeting.   

Fred Tarr, liaison of the membership committee, commented about current membership status.  The board commended the work of Libby Rush and Char Neel as chairpersons of this committee.  Everyone thought the new membership book looked great, while giving ORVLA substantial savings in printing cost.

The next board meeting will be held July 12, 9 AM at the River Grille banquet facility in Coshocton prior to the general meeting.

President Nick Fischer called the meeting to order.  Minutes from the previous meeting were distributed for approval.  With no additions or corrections, Bill Wycoff moved the minutes be approved as read.  Bill Amidon seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

The treasurer’s report was also handed out to the board.  Janice reported that the cost of printing Topline had significantly dropped because of a new publisher.  It was noted that a scholarship contribution was sent in memory of Katie McCrone’s father who recently passed away.

Under old business, the Farm Science Review will be chaired this year by Doug and Gail Targett.  It was also reported that many of the lost ORVLA items have been located.  Secretary Jean Haumschild will compile a list of the items and where they are located so other members may use them if needed. 

Bill Wycoff reported that Theo’s Restaurant in Cambridge is not open on Sundays so a new facility was needed to host the July 12th summer meeting.  Nick Fischer will check with a banquet facility in Coshocton and will advise the board via email of availability and costs. Janice Schilling reported that the restaurant in Berlin where the ORVLA Christmas meeting and seminar has previously been held is scheduled to re-open in the near future.  She will check on availability and prices before the next board meeting.

After much discussion, Bill Amidon made a motion to sanction the ORVLA Summer Solstice Llama Show as a dual show with both ALSA and the ILR-Show Division. A separate Open and ALSA sanctioned fleece show will also be held.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried. Board members reported having received numerous emails from the membership with concerns over sanctioning.  The board felt it was best for the membership to sanction through both show associations.  Further information on the show will be forthcoming in the next addition of theTopline, and will also be posted on the ORVLA website. 

Fred Tarr gave a report from membership chairs Libby Rush and Char Neel.  Currently ORVLA has 117 members who have paid their 2009 dues.  New directories are to be published, with a cost reduction of $335.80 over the 2007 published directory.  All new members from 2008 and 2009 will be welcomed on a separate page in the new directory.

Bill Amidon reported that all tax information had been filed federally and with the state for ORVLA.  Conformation papers were given to the secretary for filing with board minutes.

The next board meeting will be held Friday, June 19, after set-up is complete for the Summer Solstice Show at the Eden Park Equestrian Complex inSunbury, OH.

President Nick Fischer called the 2009 re-organizational meeting to order.  New board members, Lee Ann King, Bill Safreed and Fred Tarr were welcomed.  The secretary distributed copies of the minutes from the December meeting for review.  Bill Wycoff moved the minutes be approved, and Bill Amidon seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

The treasurer’s report for the 2008 year was reviewed by board members.  It was noted that the All- Occasions Banquet and Catering Facility was very accommodating with fees for the December meeting.  Janice indicated that some money from the 2008 Farm Science Review was still coming in to be included in the 2008 income.  Bill Wycoff made the motion to approve the treasurer’s report.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Under old business, members studied the compiled results from the ORVLA program survey returned from members.  Receiving the most votes for program consideration was the bi-annual seminar, followed by nutrition and parasites topics. 

Under new business, dates were set for the 2009 board and general membership meetings.  The board will meet March 8, June 19, July 12, October 10 and December 12.  The summer general meeting will be held July 12 and the Christmas meeting/silent auction will be held on December 12.  The December meeting was moved from the first weekend in December because of a conflict with a large alpaca show.

Ideas were discussed for the bi-annual seminar to be held in conjunction with the December Christmas meeting.  Lisa Blidar made the motion to go with a one-day format for the seminar and Christmas meeting this year. Janice Schilling seconded the motion and the motion carried.  Janice Schilling volunteered to check on a facility and banquet prices in the Berlin/Walnut Creek area.

President Fischer read a thank-you note he had received from Katie Haumschild for being a recipient of a 2008 ORVLA youth scholarship.  Nick will forward the thank-you on to Donna Spencer for inclusion in the Topline.

Nick said he had been approached by a member requesting the board to consider paying for guests’ meals at ORVLA meetings.  After discussion, Bill Amidon made the motion that those members that invite guests should pay for their meals or have the guests pay for their own.  Lee Ann King seconded the motion, and the motion carried. 

The date for the Summer Solstice show was set for June 20th at Eden Park Equestrian Complex in Sunbury.  The show will be held the week after a member’s private sale to avoid a conflict.  The show schedule and information will be discussed at the March meeting.

Bill Wycoff mentioned to the board that Paul Doran would like to step down from organizing the Farm Science Review.  Members agreed that Paul had done an outstanding job chairing ORVLA’s involvement in that event.  Nick Fischer will contact ORVLA members to about interest in chairing the Farm Science Review this fall.

Lisa Blidar made a motion to pay Connie Kauffman for the ORVLA web site for 2009.  Bill Amidon seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Bill Amidon announced that he will take care of filing ORVLA’s tax return for this year to keep non-profit status.

Bob Minto was the winner of the ORVLA membership drawing.  He was selected from members who renewed their membership by the early bird deadline.

President Fischer called the meeting to order at 9:30 AM.  The secretary’s minutes from the October meeting were printed in Topline. Rob Spencer made a motion to accept the minutes as printed and Bill Wycoff seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

Janice Schilling distributed copies to members of the treasurer’s report.  She reported that a youth scholarship from 2007 had been paid and also one awarded in 2008.  Lisa Blidar presented bills for retiring board members gifts and a token of appreciation to Donna Spencer. (note: These expenses had previously been approved via email by the board.)  Rob Spencer moved to accept the treasurer’s report.  Lisa Blidar seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Under old business, the results of the recent board election and survey were discussed.  Bill Safreed, Fred Tarr and Lee Ann King were elected to the board in a very close contest.  The survey results will be compiled for discussion at the January meeting.

The date for the ORVLA Summer Solstice show has not been set, pending the date of an ORVLA member’s private sale to be held also in June of 2009.

Nick Fischer reported receiving an email from Dr. Bravo thanking ORVLA for the recent donation for the freezer to be used in research in Peru.  He enclosed a copy of the receipt for the purchase.

A note of appreciation from Lee Ann King had also been received for ORVLA’s sponsorship of the National Fleece Show.  It will be printed in the next edition of Topline along with the email from Dr. Bravo. The next deadline date for Topline is January 10th.

Under new business, January 4th was selected as the re-organizational meeting for the board of directors.  The meeting will be held at Indian Spring Llama Ranch (Janice Schilling’s) near Baltic, beginning at 10 AM. 

Rob Spencer made a motion to adjourn, and Bill Wycoff seconded it.  The motion carried.

General Meeting 1 PM

President Fischer welcomed everyone, and had all guests introduced by their hosts.

Barb Baker, election chairperson, announced that Bill Safreed, Fred Tarr and Lee Ann King had been elected to serve on the Board of Directors.  She commented that 61% (83 of 136) of the membership had returned ballots for the election, and that the results were very close. 

Barb also reported on the National FFA Convention, thanking ORVLA for sponsoring, and stating that over 55,000 students and advisors had attended the convention this year.  Booth space for the llamas had been increased this year to 40 feet, and representatives from the alpaca community also had a display, creating an entire aisle of Camelids.  Ohio youth Katie Haumschild and her llama were featured on a large banner along with reflections, “More Llamas Would Make Us Better People” by Garrison Keillor.

Janice Schilling announced that the 2009 Daffodil Classic would be held April 11th at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds.  Further information will be in the next issue of Topline.

Char Neal, membership co-chair, reported that 45 farms have renewed membership to date for 2009.  She reminded everyone the “early bird” renewal deadline was December15th to be included in a drawing for a one year free membership, and challenged everyone to encourage new people to join. Char also reported that a new directory would be printed in February or March.  It will be in a “fold and stapled” style instead of a binder.

Lisa Blidar thanked everyone for contributing to this year’s silent auction, both by donating items and making bids.  She reported that the silent auction at the Summer Solstice show had generated enough funds to help that show finish with a profit.

Lisa also presented gifts to outgoing board members Paul Doran (2007), Rob Spencer, Joy Forshey and Darlene Sutton (2008).  A gift of appreciation was given to Donna Spencer for her outstanding work as Topline editor.  

President Fischer adjourned the meeting.  The 50/50 drawing was held with Barb Baker declared the winner.  The silent auction concluded and winning bids were announced.

President Nick Fischer called the meeting to order. The secretary’s report was distributed to members for approval.  Rob Spencer made a motion to accept the report as printed.  Bill Amidon seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

The treasurer’s report was also given to members.  Bill Wycoff made a motion to accept the report as printed, and Rob Spencer seconded the motion.  The motion carried.

Under old business, the Christmas dinner and meeting were discussed.  Lisa Blidar will confirm all plans with All-Occasions Catering banquet facility inWaldo, OH. (Note: Lisa emailed members on Monday, October 6th, with prices and menus. Lisa will forward all information to Donna Spencer to include in the next edition of Topline.)

Members discussed the possible llama auction that was brought up at the July general membership meeting.  Another ORVLA member is planning a private sale for the summer of 2009, and the board felt that another sale might not be a good idea for the same year.  It was the consensus of the group that such a sale must have at least a year for proper publicity and organization.  Nick will discuss the auction with Hank Kauffman.

Under new business, Rob Spencer spoke on behalf of Libby Rush and Char Neel, the membership chairpersons.  Concerns were expressed about publishing the directory, advertising, and the style of directory to publish.  It was pointed out that many of the whole page or half-page ads sent to be included are not “print-ready”.  It was decided to include business cards as the only advertisement, with members paying $5 and nonmembers paying $10.  Bill Amidon made a motion to publish a new directory in 2009 in a stapled center format, and to continue the early bird drawing for a free membership to those that renew before the deadline.  Rob Spencer seconded the motion, and the motion carried.  It was also pointed out that several people had paid for an ad last year and never received that advertisement.  Those ads will be included in Topline and also in the new directory.    It was also discussed whether to send renewal invoices in the election ballot this fall.  Rob Spencer made a motion to leave that decision up to the membership committee.  Janice Schilling seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Nick Fischer announced the recipients of the 2008 ORVLA scholarships.  Katie Haumschild, Katy Shaver and Anna Orlando will each receive $500 from ORVLA, pending verification of attendance from their respective colleges.

It was announced that Fred Tarr, Lee Ann King, Kris Miller and Bill Safreed will be running for the three board positions open.  Their biographies will be published in the Topline, and the ballots/biographies will be mailed to the membership on October 15th.

The next board meeting will be held at the All-Occasions Catering facility in Waldo on December 7th, beginning at 9 AM.  Bill Amidon made a motion for adjournment.  Janice Schilling seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

President Fischer called the meeting to order.  The minutes of the previous board meeting and the treasurer’s report were sent to all board members via email prior to the meeting.  Bill Amidon made the motion to accept both reports, and Bill Wycoff seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  It was noted that the financial report from the Summer Solstice Llama Show would be printed in the next edition of the Topline.

The Summer Solstice Llama Show netted a profit of $388 this year.  Board members agreed that the show ran smoothly and efficiently.  They applauded the efforts of all of the volunteers and also the work of Tina Stellhorn, Joy Bishop-Forshey and Lisa Blidar in coordinating the silent auction/Chinese raffle.  Bill Amidon made a motion to host the show again next year with Nick Fischer serving as the show’s superintendent and Jean Haumschild as clerk.  Rob Spencer seconded the motion and the motion carried.  It was agreed to send a questionnaire to the membership and show exhibitors to get feedback for improvement.  

The President read a letter he had received from Hank Kauffman asking for ORVLA’s support of a llama auction for 2009.  The board decided to bring this up during the general meeting and ask for impute from breeders present who had taken llamas to the sale held this year before making any decision regarding ORVLA support.

Janice Schilling asked about the possibility of including a questionnaire in with ORVLA ballots this year seeking imputes from the membership about programs and/or conferences for future meetings.  The board agreed that this was a good idea.

Rob Spencer addressed the board about the frustration Donna Spencer had over getting articles in a timely manner for publication in Topline. It was noted that many good and exciting programs have been held, but no one is stepping up to write reports about these events for the organization’s magazine.  If the membership doesn’t send in articles or reports of such activities, the excellent quality that has been established with Topline will not be able to continue.  Also, it was pointed out that the deadline posted for material must be adhered to in order to get the magazine to the printer on time.  Topline is considered one of the top publications through the Eastern United States, so everyone must be willing to do his/her part to get articles written and turned in to Donna in a timely manner.

Nick Fischer reported that he had received a request from Mike Haumschild as superintendent of the Buckeye Regional seeking support for the show from the ORVLA organization.  Rob Spencer moved that ORVLA give $350 in support of the show.  Bill Amidon seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Charlene Arendas spoke to the board concerning her recent trip to Peru and her concern for the large number of crias dying there from enterotoxaemia.  The team of veterinarians that she traveled with has come up with a plan to help with this health issue, but is in need of funds to purchase a refrigerator/freezer for the lab there.  Bill Amidon made a motion to contribute $500 for that purchase, and Joy Bishop-Forshey seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Char will present more information about the lab and the research being done there during her program at the general meeting.

The next Board of Directors’ meeting will be held on Saturday, October 4th, at Eden Park Equestrian Complex following the completion of classes for the day for the Buckeye Regional.

Rob Spencer moved to adjourn the meeting, and Bill Wycoff seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

General Meeting @ 1PM   

President Nick Fischer called the general meeting to order.  He reported to the membership on the ORVLA Summer Solstice Show and thanked all of the sponsors and the hard work of the silent auction committee for helping to make the show a success.

President Fischer reminded the membership that three seats will be open on the board, and challenged each one to nominate someone to run for a position.  He reminded everyone that each person needs to be nominated by two ORVLA members and that nomination forms were available.

Nick read a letter from Hank Kauffman asking for ORVLA support of a llama auction.  A recent auction was held this past June in Danville, but had not been promoted adequately enough to get buyers to come out and bid.  Barb Baker spoke and stated that she felt ORVLA has the time, resources and effort to aid in promoting a llama auction.  She suggested incorporating a llama “do” day with the auction to give new owners first hand knowledge of proper care of a llama.  She felt that promotion was the key to getting new people involved with llamas.  Bob Johnson commented that that while it is good to have a sale, it was equally important to regulate starting bids and also promote it in a positive manner.  Sue McFarland voiced her concern that the Danville Auction facility was not conducive for a good sale experience.  Paul Doran suggested that ORVLA might consider hosting such a sale prior to the ORVLA Summer Solstice Show, stating that he believed that we should set precedence on how we want llamas to be perceived.  Deb Arendas asked about the possibility of a website or making a sale book available so interested buyers could view the animals and their lineage prior to the sale.  Consensus from the membership indicated that the Eden Parkfacility has the right atmosphere to host a llama sale.  Don McFarland commented on the success of his farm’s open house held each fall, and suggested that more farms promote llamas through such an endeavor. All information will be taken under advisement and reported back to Hank.  No other action was taken.

Several upcoming shows were discussed.  Joy Bishop Forshey announced the Fulton County lama show to be held Friday, August 29th; Don McFarland announced the Hartford Fair llama show would be on Friday, August 8th and class sponsors were still needed.  Jean Haumschild gave information about the Buckeye Regional October 4-5 at Eden Park Equestrian Complex in Sunbury, and Nick announced a Farm Bureau sponsored Alpaca and Llama Seminar in Tallmadge, OH on September 13th.  Paul Doran gave an update on the Farm Science Review September 16-18.  Farms can participate for $125 a day, with a total of four farms each day.  For more information, contact Paul.

Barb Baker requested help from the membership in adding fiber to bookmarks for the National FFA Convention Lama Booth.  Anyone that can help should contact Barb ASAP.

The Christmas meeting and dinner will be held Sunday, December 7th, at the All-Occasions Catering facility in Waldo.  Lisa Blidar will be chairing the silent auction and asked everyone to bring an item for the auction.  Everyone was encouraged to solicit donations from businesses as well.  A receipt form and other information will be in the next issue of Topline.      

President Fischer thanked Russ and Kris Miller for hosting today’s meeting and luncheon.  The meeting adjourned to listen to Charlene Arendas’ report on her trip to Peru.

May 5, 2008 – Board voted to sponsor three trophies for the Ohio State Fair (same as in years past).

May 5, 2008 – Decals were ordered from Kinko's @ $280 for 2000. Art work will be done by Kinko’s and put onto a disk for further use.  This will have a minimum cost for set-up.  

June 5, 2008 – Board approved payment for Farm Science Review for the space and also for the tent.  Board also approved payment for Joy to participate in a phone conference with MAF/LMRG.

In old business, Superintendent Nick Fischer and Clerk Jean Haumschild provided the board with an update on numbers for the show.  Nick reminded everyone that the summer general meeting will be held Sunday, July 13th, at the home of Russ & Kris Miller in Galloway.  Deadline for making reservations is July 1st.

Under new business, Nick read a letter he had received from Deb Gaskill outlining Debbie Shellabarger and her meeting in front of the State Senate Agriculture Committee in Columbus concerning including llamas with the alpacas as agricultural animal livestock [House Bill 352].  She included a copy of the presentation that was given to each committee member, and asked ORVLA to reimburse her for printing the 25 copies of the report.  Rob Spencer made the motion to pay for the printing, and Bill Amidon seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Barb Baker requested ORVLA support for the lama booth at the National FFA Conference next fall, and money for her expenses to the Camelid Conference this summer.  Bill Amidon made the motion to donate $100 towards the FFA booth and $250 towards Barb’s expenses at the conference.  Joy Forshey seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Nick also presented a letter he had received concerning children’s coloring books that included llamas.  The coloring book author was from New York, and the books sell for $4.63 each.  The board felt that the books could be advertised in Topline for anyone interested in purchasing. 

Nick also presented a request from Llama Life II to include ORVLA in the organization of a “round-up” of all lama organizations to be printed in a summer copy of the magazine.  ORVLA would place a business card ad with a link to the organization’s website, and in turn Llama Life II would provide a link to the ORVLA website from Llama Life II, inclusion in the directory, and free business card ads to promote ORVLA activities.  Bill Amidon moved to participate in Llama Life II’s promotion, and Joy Forshey seconded the motion.  The magazine also requested a list of new ORVLA members quarterly, but the board felt it could only provide a list of those members who had signed releases.

President Fischer also reminded board members that three positions on the board will be open this fall through the election process.  Board members were encouraged to talk with potential candidates for those positions.

Joy Forshey reported on a recent rescue of a herd of eighty llamas.  Several states were involved in the placement of these animals, coordinated through the Southern State Rescue Organization.  Joy encouraged personnel or organizational contributions to help in these rescue efforts when they arise.

Because of a conflict, Joy Forshey and Tina Stellhorn will not be able to chair ORVLA’s silent auction at this year’s Christmas meeting.  After discussion, Rob Spencer nominated Lisa Blidar to chair the auction this year and Bill Amidon seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

The next board meeting will be held Sunday, July 13th, at Miller’s Farm @Darby Creek in Galloway, beginning at 9 AM.

President Nick Fischer called the meeting to order. Copies of the secretary’s report and treasurer’s report were distributed.  Bill Amidon made a motion to accept the secretary’s report as printed. Lisa Blidar seconded the motion and the motion carried.  Lisa also moved to accept the treasurer’s report and Bill Wycoff seconded that motion.  Motion carried.

Under old business, members worked out details for the ORVLA llama show in June.  Jean Haumschild will book the judge’s room at the Holiday Inn Express in Sunbury.  Members agreed to meet at Eden Park on Friday, June 20th, at 2 PM to set up for the show.  Lee Ann King has graciously offered to donate ribbons she had left over, and Rob Spencer will get show numbers for the clerk.  Lisa Blidar explained the Chinese Raffle and encouraged the board to solicit items from other members and businesses for the raffle tables.

Plans for the ORVLA summer meeting were discussed.  Members contacted Kris Miller of Miller Farm @ Darby Creek about hosting this meeting.  Kris agreed to have the meeting at their farm on Sunday, July 13.  Joy Bishop Forshey is lining up the program, asking two ORVLA members to give a presentation about their recent trips to Peru.

Lisa Blidar approached the board about purchasing static clings with the ORVLA logo and web site information to give to members for display.  She had checked with Kinko’s about cost.  Board members agreed to purchase 1000 clings and decided to enclose them in the election mailing.  Donna Spencer will also check with companies about pricing in order to find the best cost.  Rob Spencer moved to purchase the clings and Bill Wycoff seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Each membership will receive two clings with the option to purchase more if desired.

It was brought before the board that there had been some complaints about the membership not being able to voice their opinions on ORVLA matters.  All members are encouraged to attend both the board meetings and the open membership meetings to share concerns and/or ideas with the board.  Board members are elected by the membership and serve as their representatives.  All board members’ email and phone numbers are printed in each addition of the Topline for member convenience to contact about ORVLA matters. 

Donna Spencer shared with the Board concerns and problems with the annual photo contest held each December.  She stated that some photos are entered not “camera-ready” but run off on computer paper.  It is also a hardship to get the contest set up and prizes purchased.  After discussion, the board decided to postpone the contest until these problems could be resolved.  Rob Spencer made the motion for this action and Bill Amidon seconded it.  Motion carried.

Lisa Blidar reported that the December 7th Christmas meeting was set for All-Occasions Catering in Waldo, OH.  Conformation for that date had been received.

Barb Baker sent a copy of a House bill to Nick concerning listing alpacas as livestock and asked the board’s opinion about the inclusion of llamas as well.  This reclassification status would help breeders finance purchases and qualify them for more production assistance.  Janice Schilling shared an article she had received from her local farm bureau stating that llamas were already considered in this bill.  She gave each member a copy of the article, and Nick will forward one on to Barb.

Rob Spencer showed the board a copy of the Farm & Dairy Directory that is published once a month. The NEOLA organization places an ad in this publication and pointed out that ORVLA could do the same.  No action was taken.

The next Board of Directors’ meeting will be held Friday, June 20th, 4PM at the Eden Park Equestrian Complex in Sunbury prior to the Summer Solstice Show on Saturday.

President Bill Wycoff called the meeting to order.  Lisa Blidar was welcomed as the new member of the board.

The secretary’s report was distributed to each member.  Nick Fischer moved the minutes be approved as written and Rob Spencer seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

The treasurer’s report was also distributed, which included a year-ending account of all checks that were written in 2007.  It was noted that the scholarship checks had not been issued, pending verification of enrollment from the students’ colleges or universities.  The balance as of December 31, 2007 is $12,964.61.  Bill Amidon made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report.  Paul Doran seconded the motion, and the motion carried.  

Since this was the organizational meeting of the board for 2008, the following new officers and committee liaisons were elected:  Nick Fischer - president; Lisa Blidar – vice president; Jean Haumschild – secretary; Janice Schilling – treasurer; Sunshine committee – Lisa Blidar; Youth Committee – Joy Forshey; Scholarship Committee – Nick Fischer & Janice Schilling; Public Relations Committee – Lisa Blidar Bill Amidon, Rob Spencer & Darlene Sutton; Program Committee – Lisa Blidar, Joy Forshey & Bill Wycoff; Web Page – Bill Amidon; Membership Committee – Rob Spencer; Marketing Committee – Joy Forshey, Bill Amidon & Bill Wycoff; Library Committee – Darlene Sutton; Historian – Jean Haumschild; Fiber Committee – Joy Forshey; and Election Committee – Jean Haumschild.

The board members discussed hosting an ALSA show in June.  Paul Doran gave a report on the facilities available at the Ohio State Fairgrounds and Nick Fischer reported on the availability and cost of the Coshocton County Fairgrounds.  Members decided to contact the Eden Park Equestrian Complex in Sunbury for cost and availability for a June show.   Members then discussed other aspects of hosting a show, including date, ribbons, premiums, workers, judges, and entry fees.  Each member was appointed to a show sub-committee to begin planning for the show.  Jean Haumschild will report to the board via email on the Eden Park Complex as the show site with the Coshocton County Fairgrounds as a second choice location.  An entry form will be developed after the location is set and the judges hired.  Nick Fischer and Jean Haumschild will format the entry form and submit it to the board for approval.

Joy Forshey reported to the board on the Michigan Lama Association’s policy with youth entries at sanctioned shows in Michigan.  That association will pay $10 towards registration at a sanctioned show for each youth for one animal.  The youth must be a member of the association by April 1st to be considered for the reduced entry fee.  The classes that the fee will support include showmanship, performance and youth judging.  The show itself is reimbursed by the association for each youth that meet the qualifications and enters.   After some discussion, board members voted to offer all youth that enter the ORVLA ALSA show a reduced entry fee.

Bill Amidon requested that Connie Kaufman be paid for the ORVLA web site for 2008.  Paul Doran made a motion to pay Connie and Rob Spencer seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Bill also announced a new tax form that the association must complete this year.  He offered to file the necessary paperwork.

Paul Doran asked about ORVLA’s support for the 2008 Farm Science Review, September 16-18.  The board unanimously voted in support of exhibiting at this year’s Farm Science Review.  Paul will complete, sign and submit the application with the board paying the required fees.

Members set the dates for the 2008 board meetings: March 30, June meeting at the ORVLA show, July 13 prior to the summer membership meeting, October 4 at the Buckeye Regional show in Sunbury and December 7 prior to the annual Christmas general meeting.  

Rob Spencer moved that the meeting be adjourned.  Bill Wycoff seconded the motion and the motion carried.

The next board meeting will be held March 30, 10 AM, at a location TBA.

ORVLA Board of Directors Meeting

President Bill Wycoff called the meeting to order. Copies of the secretary’s report were distributed to members (as printed in the Topline).  Bill Amidon made a motion to accept the report.  Paul Doran seconded the meeting and the motion carried.

Janice Schilling provided members with a detailed statement of finances for the year to date.  Although the treasury showed a current balance of $10,922.15, she noted that the organization had a deficit this year between monies collected and monies spent.  Janice also pointed out that two scholarships to youth were yet to be paid, plus expenses for the meals of the conference. After discussion from the board as to where money was lost, Darlene Sutton made a motion to accept the report and Rob Spencer seconded the motion.  Motion carried. 

Nick Fischer reported on the ORVLA Board election where three seats were open.  Barb Baker, Steve Vicars, Patti Fischer and Nick met to count the ballots with Bill Wycoff, Jean Haumschild, and Lisa Blidar being elected to the board.  Nick also noted that of the 149 ballots sent out to members, 81 were returned in the election process.

Members discussed the future of the ORVLA Youth Show.  This show has lost money for the organization for the past two years due to the low number of entries.  Various options were brought to the table on ways to support the youth in our organization.  Bill Amidon made a motion to not host a youth show this year, and Rob Spencer seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Tina Stellhorn reported to the board that over 100 items had been donated for the silent auction this year.  She also went over the procedure for making the auction run more efficiently.  Members of the board discussed holding other silent auctions throughout the year to help generate more income for the organization.  All were in agreement to continue sponsoring the youth scholarships (3- $500 scholarships given to the youth of ORVLA members – 1 of which would go to a student studying to be a lama veterinarian).  Money for the scholarships comes out of the income from the silent auction.

Along with the addition of other silent auctions, board members discussed sponsoring an ALSA show.  It was noted that Ohio has dropped from fifteen plus ALSA qualifying shows per season to six or seven.  Several board members expressed concern on keeping shows going within the state.  Board members will price the cost of facility rentals and Bill Wycoff will announce the formation of a show committee at the general meeting.  Members will be asked to volunteer to serve on this show committee.  Additional discussion will be held at the next board meeting.

Donna Spencer requested permission to order envelopes for mailing copies of the Topline and ad information out to businesses.  Bill Amidon made a motion to purchase the envelopes.  Paul Doran seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Joy Forshey requested reimbursement to Tina Stellhorn for postage in sending “thank you” notes to the various businesses that sent items for the auction.  The Board unanimously approved that reimbursement.

Vicky McMaster distributed a list of memberships that had already been renewed for 2008.  She noted that there were four new memberships already for next year.  She asked the board’s permission to send a copy of theTopline and a membership application to farms within our region (in states that border Ohio) that currently are not members of ORVLA. Bill Amidon made the motion to send out these applications.  Nick Fischer seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Joy Forshey announced an upcoming conference call for the Morris Animal Foundation where she will be participating and asked for any concerns or contributions.

Rob Spencer moved to adjourn the board meeting and Bill Amidon seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  The next board of directors’ meeting will be held Sunday, January 6th, at Janice Schilling’s home near Baltic.  The meeting will begin at 10 AM.

General Meeting Minutes 

President Bill Wycoff called the meeting to order.  Nick Fischer announced the results of the board of director’s election, and complimented the organization on choosing to cast their ballots this year.

President Bill pointed out that membership applications were available on the tables for anyone interested in renewing membership with Vicky McMaster today.

Several new members were introduced to the organization and welcomed.

Donna Spencer recognized the Amidon, McFarland/Ruckman, Doran, and Johnson farms for buying full page ads in the Topline for the past five years.

Jean Haumschild announced the publication of a 4-H lama resource manual and project book that will be available this fall for prospective 4-H youth.  Copies of the manual will be available for purchase through the Ohio State Cooperative Extension Agency in each county.  

President Bill also announced that ORVLA will continue to sponsor three $500 youth scholarships.  Information and applications will be printed in theTopline.  He also announced the formation of a committee to plan a proposed ALSA show to be sponsored by ORVLA.  Any member interested in being on the committee should contact Paul Doran.

The meeting was adjourned.  Members were treated to Christmas musical selections sung by Donna Berbig, and the results of the photo contest and silent auction items winners were announced.

Business conducted via email since December 2 meeting

December 15 – Donna Spencer forwarded a list of prospective advertisers that had been sent a letter and complimentary Topline.  Members were asked to submit suggestions for other businesses that might wish to advertise.

December 17 – Joy Forshey forwarded a message from Jan Wassink asking for $25 donation from each association to help with the cost of a teleconference for the Morris Animal Foundation.  The board approved the fee and it was mailed December 19th.

President Bill Wycoff called the meeting to order. The secretary and treasurer’s reports were distributed and approved as printed.

Tina Stellhorn, this year’s silent auction chair, presented the board with ideas to increase revenue from the auction. She distributed flyers about seeking donations and donation receipt forms to give to businesses or individuals that donate products for the auction. She also discussed other changes, which included keeping track of the sale on computer and adding runners to distribute the items to the buyer after the bidding closes. These new procedures should help the auction in the collection of money and also be more efficient with time at the Christmas meeting.

Paul Doran reported that the Farm Science Review had three farms represented. He stressed the importance of ORVLA continuing to promote the lama industry, especially to those that attend events like the Farm Science Review.

Nick Fischer reported on the scholarship applications and announced the three students chosen for the awards. Scholarship winners were Charlene Arendas, Anna Orlando, and Mark Fenker.

Nick also reported that five members were seeking election to the board for the next term. Those running include Fred Tarr, Vicky McMaster, Lisa Blidar and incumbents Bill Wycoff and Jean Haumschild. Ballots will be mailed to the membership by October 15th and must be returned to Barb Baker postmarked by November 15th.

The board discussed the future of hosting an ORVLA youth show. The association lost $1500 this year, and it was noted that both judges had volunteered their services. One option brought to the table was to sponsor an ALSA show and give youth participants a reduced rate to enter. After discussion, the youth show topic was tabled until a later date to see how much revenue is generated by the silent auction and also discussing the show with the membership at the December general meeting.

Bill Amidon reported that he had filed the necessary paperwork to keep ORVLA in non-profit status. He volunteered to continue to complete this paperwork in the future as well.

President Bill Wycoff read a “thank you” from June Black to ORVLA for sponsoring the National Fleece Show. This note will be printed for the membership in the TOPLINE.

It was announced that all fees, speakers, and arrangements have been finalized for the Holiday Seminar and Christmas meeting in December. Vicky McMaster will send out postcards as reminders of the upcoming seminar and meeting to past members of ORVLA, inviting them to attend.

ORVLA Board of Directors Minutes - July 15, 2007

President Bill Wycoff called the meeting to order. Copies of the previous board meeting were distributed. President Wycoff stated that we had not sent a donation to the Camelid Conference last year, but was asked by Barb Baker to send the donation to the lama breeders that organize the lama booth for the National FFA Conference. Bill Amidon made a motion to amend the previous motion past at the last board meeting to earmark ORVLA’s $100 donation to the FFA booth instead of the Camelid Conference (as done in 2006). Joy Forshey seconded the motion and the motion carried. Darlene Sutton made a motion to accept the board minutes and Bill Amidon seconded the motion. Motion carried.

The treasurer’s report was distributed to board members. Janice reported that the Youth Show collected $670 in entry fees this year. Although the organization would see a loss in monies from the show, all present felt it was a success and a great way to promote youth in the industry. Janice also reported a check returned from the show for NSF. The board decided to deny that entry from any future youth shows until cash or a bank check was received covering both entry in 2007 and any new entries in the future. Paul Doran made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report and Bill Amidon seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Vicky McMaster, membership chair, reported that the directory was complete and would be distributed to members present for the general meeting with the rest being sent out in the mail. ORVLA has a current membership of 156, down from previous years. Vicky suggested that the directory not be printed each year, but only every three years with supplements with new members or corrected information sent annually to the membership through the Topline. Rob Spencer made a motion to print the entire directory every three years with supplements published annually. Nick Fischer seconded the motion. Motion carried. Vicky also asked board approval to send 4-H clubs that pay for membership a directory. The board unanimously agreed.

President Wycoff announced that Joy was working with the Lama Medical Research as the ORVLA representative, and that expenses for Barb Baker to represent the organization at the Camelid Conference had been paid.

Nick Fischer reported that four applications for the three ORVLA scholarships had been received by the deadline. His committee will meet during the state fair llama show to make the final selections. Recipients will be announced at the Buckeye Regional in October.

Nick Fischer announced that nominations for board seats would be sent out in the next addition of the Topline. Three seats on the board will be up for election. Nick also announced that Barb Baker had agreed to chair the election committee.

Paul Doran reported that four speakers will take the podium for the afternoon session of the ORVLA December Conference. Jan Wassink, ILR president, will be the featured speaker in the evening. Janice Schilling reported that rooms would be available for the conference at Berlin Hotel and Suites. Troyer’s Restaurant, where the conference will be held, will provide a potato bar for Saturday evening’s meal and a full Amish Buffet for the Christmas party on Sunday. Saturday’s lunch will be on-your-own for those attending. Tina Stellhorn has agreed to chair the silent auction on Sunday. Janice will ask Cindy Ruckman to organize some type of event for the youth during the conference. Nick Fischer made a motion to accept the conference plans as presented, and Rob Spencer seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Bill Amidon stated that he had received a notice from an attorney about changes in the rules with the IRS in keeping non-profit organization status. Janice also reported that as treasurer she must complete some paperwork as well. Bill Amidon agreed to take care of the necessary paperwork and will work with Janice to make sure we comply with all IRS rules.

Bill Amidon and Joy Forshey gave the board a look at the first draft of the new ORVLA information brochure. Bill stated that the brochure is now on the computer so changes can be implemented as needed. Bill will print the brochures and have them available to use in the ORVLA education booth at the state fair llama show. Rob Spencer made a motion to reimburse Bill for any expenses that he may incur for printing the brochure. Nick Fischer seconded the motion and the motion carried.

Mike Haumschild, Buckeye Regional Superintendent, asked the board to continue their financial support of the regional by again being a sponsor this year. Bill Amidon made a motion to sponsor the Buckeye Regional at $400. Paul Doran seconded the motion and the motion carried.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, October 6th, at the Buckeye Regional in Sunbury at the conclusion of the day’s events.


ORVLA Board of Directors Meeting – May 12, 2007

President Bill Wycoff called the meeting to order.  Copies of the previous board meeting minutes were distributed to members.  Paul Doran made a motion to accept the secretary’s report.  Nick Fischer seconded the motion, and the motion carried.  The treasurer’s report was sent via email to board members prior to the meeting.  Bill Amidon made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report, and Joy Forshey seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Paul Doran asked the board to clarify the money sent to Camelid Conference.  The board had previously approved $250 to Barb Baker for her expenses in attending the conference as a representative for ORVLA.  Paul felt that an additional donation to the Conference itself needed to be addressed.  Bill Amidon made a motion to give the Conference a $100 donation, separate from the money given to Barb.  Joy Forshey seconded the motion and the motion carried.

Bill Amidon reported that he had clarified the changes about the ORVLA scholarship (as approved by the membership at the December meeting) with OSU.

Janice Schilling sent word that the ORVLA educational booth could be set up at this year’s Ohio State Fair Llama Show.  Members discussed the ORVLA promotional brochure and changes that needed to be made.  A new brochure will be developed to use in conjunction with the educational booth. 

Janice also sent a flyer with menus and pricing for the December conference/meeting.  After some discussion, final December menu selections and preparations were tabled until the next board meeting in July.

Kristy Huffman, youth show superintendent, reported twenty-two entries - nineteen llamas, and five alpacas in this year’s show.  Board members discussed possibly changing the date of next year’s show to help increase youth participation.  All agreed the show had been a success.

The board discussed the recent tragedy involving Eve Len Ashbaugh and asked that a card of appreciation be sent to those that helped tend to Eve’s llamas.  Jean Haumschild will send a card to those involved in placing Eve’s llamas.  Paul Doran asked the board about including a speaker at the December conference to address estate management when animals are involved.  The board asked Paul to check into the possibility of securing a speaker on that topic.  It was noted that a rose was sent to the Funeral Home for Eve’s calling hours and the board will make a donation in the future to the lama rescue fund that is to be established in honor of Eve.  

The next board meeting will be held on Sunday, July 15th, prior to the summer general meeting at the McFarland Llama Farm in Mount Vernon.

President Bill Wycoff called the meeting to order.  Kristy Huffman sent word that everything was set for the ORVLA Youth Show May 12 at the Muskingum Fairgrounds in Zanesville, OH. A sub-junior class may be added, with interested participants signing up on show day.

Rob Spencer moved that the ORVLA Scholarship application be approved as printed and Nick Fischer seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Bill Amidon will notify OSU about the scholarship change from previous years.  The deadline for applications to be submitted was set for July 30th.  All completed applications will be mailed to Scholarship Chairman Nick Fischer.  Rob Spencer made a motion to award the scholarships at the end of Saturday classes at the Buckeye Regional October 6, 2007.  Bill Amidon seconded the motion and the motion carried.  It was also decided to include scholarship applications in the packets for the ORVLA Youth Show. 

Bill Wycoff reported that he had talked with Barb Baker about representing ORVLA at the Camelid Conference this summer.  Janice Schilling made a motion to give Barb $250 towards her expenses for the conference. Paul Doran seconded the motion and the motion carried.  Barb will give a report about the conference to the organization at the December meeting.

Paul Doran distributed a tentative schedule for the July ORVLA meeting to be held at the McFarland Llama Farm in Mount Vernon, OH.  Speakers for the program will include Marty McMaster of the OSU facility in Marysville, the Knox County Extension Agent about composting dead animals, and Cindy Ruckman/Lee Ann King on fleece judging.  There will also be a program for any children that attend.  ORVLA will pay for a port-a-pot to be set up.

It was announced that the Lama Medical Research Group (LMRG) was asking for ORVLA to send a representative to serve the Llama/Alpaca Research committee.  Paul Doran nominated Joy Forshey to represent ORVLA and Rob Spencer seconded the motion.   Motion carried.  Bill Amidon will talk with Joy about being the ORVLA representative.

Final preparations are being made for the December ORVLA Conference and Christmas meeting.  The main speaker on Saturday night will be Jan Wessink from the International Lama Registry.  The afternoon session speakers will include Darrell Anderson (Auctioneer), Barb Baker (Camelid Conference), and Mike Gerkin (private sales).  The conference/December meeting will be held on the weekend of December 1-2, 2007 at Troyer’s Country Dining in Berlin, OH.  Possible menus were discussed.  Janice Schilling will report back to the board about further arrangements for the weekend.

February 16, 2007 is the deadline for joining ORVLA for inclusion in the ORVLA Directory.  Rob Spencer will check on publication of the directory and report back to the board.

President Bill Wycoff announced that it was time to seek potential candidates for Board elections.  Three seats on the board will be up at the end of this year.

The next meeting will be held Saturday, May 12th, following the ORVLA Youth Show in Zanesville.
